The bands were just one attraction. At the edge of the cozy downtown site, which wasn't much bigger than some suburban backyards, graffiti artists worked on a striking, black and white mural that was to be divided into individual pieces and sold off. Across the lawn, so called secret shows unfolded in plain view while food trucks served delicacies like steamed pizza buns and gourmet ice cream sandwiches. The 'Barboretum' was a popular spot, offering brews from Ottawa's Kichesippi Beer Co. as well as cocktails with names like Drink the Worm and Hipster Hangover.

The Calgary native's high pitched voice had an otherworldly effect, while his headless electric guitar took riffs into unexpected directions. From this year'sexcellent album, Shrink Dust, which was a longlisted nominee for the Polaris Prize, Van Gaalen played a sparse version of Hangman's Son, accompanying himself on harmonica, and the rhythmically elastic Weighed Sin, to name a few. A special guest, singer Julie Fader, added another layer of ethereal vocals during a couple of songs, including the wonderful City of Electric Light.
This is not a band that subscribes to the slow build approach torock concerts. They started on a high, proudly unfurling the chugging Draw Us Lines, then veered into the furious Nighttime/Anytime (It's Alright) and followed it up with the smouldering Hot Line Operator. In the crowd, a round of sparklers crackled along with the ringing guitars and noodling keyboard.

The tunes brought out a similar passion among fans, who clustered up front and cheered wildly at the peak of every song.
The band is celebrating the 11th anniversary of their landmark album, Shine A Light, and played most of the songs from it. Earlier in the day, another non Ottawa act, Chad Van Gaalen, drew the crowd into his musical weirdness with a discordant barrage of noise that evolved into an adventurous selection of original songs, including the deceptively sweet Cut Off My Hands, the swaggering I Changed My Name and the trippy Peace on the Rise.
Throughout the day, hipsters of all ages flocked to the backyard of Arts Court for the last time. With the site slated for redevelopment, the event that bills itself as a boutique festival of music and arts will have to find a new home next year.
