Crews have been taken off of their typical duties to get the stations repaired, and the stations have to be shut down while the work is done.
"Thieves are attempting to steal copper that they will sell at perhaps a recycling center," said Martin Murray of PSNH.
Manchester police said someone is breaking into substations across the city and stealing copper from the facilities.

IN ONE CASE, THEY DAMAGED A REGULATOR THAT COST MORE THAN $10,000, ALL TO STEAL WIRING THAT WILL NET THE THIEVES ABOUT $50. THE DANGER OF THESE CRIMES COULD LEAVE THEM SERIOUSLY INJURED OR WORSE. IT IS A SITUATION WHERE THERE IS A QUESTION OF SAFETY, OF RELIABILITY, OF COST, AND ULTIMATELY, IT COSTS YOU AND ME, THE CUSTOMERS, FOR THE WORK THAT HAS TO BE DONE. PSNH SAYS THEY WILL BE REPLACING SOME OF THAT COPPER GROUND WIRE WITH COPPER CLAD STEEL, WHICH IS LESS VALUABLE. THE POLICE SAY THEY ARE STILL
"We'll likely have to take this substation out of service for some period of time and serve customers in another manner that can put stress on a system," Murray said.
Murray said the thieves are taking a dangerous risk.
Manchester police said anyone with information should call them. OFFICIALS AT THE POWER COMPANY TELL US THAT THE REPLACEMENT COSTS FAR EXCEED THE ACTUAL VALUE OF WHAT IS BEING STOLEN. PSNH SAYS SOMEONE IS BREAKING INTO THEIR POWER SUBSTATIONS ACROSS THE STATE IN HOPES OF BAGGING THE COMPANY'S COPPER WIRING. THIEVES ARE ATTEMPTING TO STEAL COPPER THAT THEY WILL SELL AT PERHAPS A RECYCLING CENTER. THEY HAVE SEEN AT LEAST 10 BREAK INS AT NINE DIFFERENT SUBSTATIONS AROUND MANCHESTER. ADD THAT TO SEVERAL OTHERS AT SUBSTATIONS IN THE ROCHESTER AREA. THE THIEVES GOT AWAY WITH ENOUGH COPPER AT THE STATION TO TAKE THE SYSTEM OFF LINE. WE WILL LIKELY HAVE TO TAKE THIS SUBSTATION OUT OF SERVICE FOR SOME PERIOD OF TIME AND SERVE CUSTOMERS IN ANOTHER MANNER, AND THAT CAN PUT QUITE A STRESS ON THE SYSTEM.
